“The first made me stronger for the second”

Toolz: My dad had been a bit unwell for a while but he had always been a fighter. He has been super strong, and with a larger than life character.

But when he got ill, in my mind I was like, “yes he’s old but he’s gonna get through it”. I just could not imagine him not being around.

I’m just grateful that although he wasn’t around for my second son, he did meet my first son. I do have like video clips and pictures of him playing with my son and that’s a great comfort.

I think losing the baby before him kind of toughened me up. I could see it coming so I did start to prepare myself even though I was a bit in denial as well but I think the first thing made me stronger for the second.

Surrender

Toolz reminded me about one of the most powerful spiritual practices - surrender.

She said once the doctor gave her the bad news, she decided to reach a place of acceptance. 

Once you’ve surrendered to the moment and you say ‘look, I’ve done everything I can do and the rest of it I can do nothing about so I the best thing I can do is accept it and flow with it like water’, then peace comes into your spirit.

It was the acceptance of the inevitable that allowed peace to come flooding into her.

We go deep. We talk about losing her child in a harrowing experience that she calls a mental and spiritual makeover. We talk about losing her dad, who she was very close to. And the journey from those dark places to now and her two beautiful sons.

“I don’t worry anymore”

Joeboy: I don't worry anymore.

Last year, I used to worry, but right now, I don't worry anymore. This is because instead of worrying, all you have to do is make a move.

Even if you make the move and it doesn't work, you have to try again. That’s why you're alive. That’s why you have to keep trying.

The world keeps spinning, so you have to be consistent.

"I don't want to go back to my old life"

Joeboy: I'm grateful for my life. There'll be challenges on the way, but that the way life is. There is this new slang I like saying ‘problem no dey finish’; there will always be challenges.

For every level you get to, there's a new devil. It even gets more difficult when you are up there as a big emerging artist.

I intend to get better. I intend to get bigger, I have to be consistent. I have to be careful of what I say and what I do, of places I visit. Sometimes, it feels like life is so restricted. Sometimes I feel like [how it was] before the pandemic, where I'll travel to a country and chill.

It feels like I can't do some things, but I'm thankful. I don't want to go back to my old life.
